Summary: LITTLE Machine
Comment: I have had this for over a year and I am not disappointed that I got it. I have owned uprights since I began purchasing vacuums. We own lots of pets with long hair and we have carpeted stairs. I got tired of lugging the upright up and down the stairs and almost falling on several occasions. When I saw this and ours happened to quit I decided to purchase and I am glad I did. Besides some of the comments which I agree on their pros and cons, the only con I have is that while it is compact and lightweight the bags are small. If you have a good number of pets be prepared to change bags frequently. I don't mind the small bags since the machine is easy to carry around the house to use and up and down stairs.

Summary: Cute little vacuum, works well
Comment: We waited a long time to buy this, since reviews were so mixed. We've had it now about a month and we really like it.
A few comments: The bags are incredibly difficult to find and very expensive. By accident we orderered the clinic s bags (instead of the classic) and they seem to fit fine.
As to the noise: The vacuum is very quiet until you turn on the powerhead. Then it's just as loud as any other vacuum.
Our one complaint is the "twistiness" of the wand. It's difficult to make the powerhead go where you want it. It's difficult to steer. It was a good idea to be able to vacuum under things but it doesn't quite work.
It cleans very well. We have two huge long-haired dogs and this sucks up the hair very well (in addition to all the pin feathers of our bird). One of our carpets is solid dark brown and this cleans it well. It's also very easy to take the wand out of the cannister to clean high up or in other crevises.
The unit is very light and pretty small.

Summary: Great vacuum with a small dust bag
Comment: I purchased this vacuum because it was rated the best by Consumer Reports. (Immediately after I purchased it the next issue of Consumer Reports had a new review that rated a Kenmore vacuum equal to the Electrolux.) I was most concerned about having a vacuum that would pick up cat hair. My cat has especially soft down-like fur that sticks to everything. My previous vacuums had never cost more than about $70. But after getting this cat, my old vacuum would not pick up her fur. I had to get down and scrape it off the carpet with a shower squeegy. The electrolux has changed my life. It is amazing to see my carpets so free of cat hair. It is also nice to have the dusting brush and the crevice tool attached to the handle so it is easy to switch tools. The suction is really powerful even with the attachments. The one drawback is the small size of the dust bag. My previous vacuum had a much larger bag and also because it didn't pick up as much dirt and hair I could vacuum my house many times before needing to replace the bag. It is nice, however, to have the indicator light to let you know that the bag is full.

Summary: tidbits you might want to know...
Comment: it might be that i was "power head" deprived for several months till budget allowed, but this puppy has great power! on all 3 carpet heights, the vac all but moves on its own which equates to GREAT pick up even in this high traffic plus animal home!
now for those tidbits: i waited a week to write this so i'd have several uses to base my comments on. don't know exact length of cord, but you should plan on switching outlets often. we live in old Victorian with LR, DR, kitchen & entry on main floor; cord only reached 1/2 way into DR from LR. the "tool caddy" mentioned is in the wand; only holds the dusting brush & crevice tool and the brush has a tendency to fall out - no space for the upholstery brush (which has "hard" rubber fingers instead of brush - it is great on stairs!)or the floor brush which is VERY wide and makes cleaning go quickly. this is important, as in my opinion, while the power head is magic on all carpet heights, it's not good on hard surfaces. although none of the attachments have a male/female connection, they fit securely. the extension on the wand doesn't add a lot of length and, if you apply a tad of pressure, can pop down a notch. knew there wasn't an on/off switch on the wand when i purchased it, but am surprised how much i miss that feature. also, the hose doesn't rotate where it plugs into vac body. there is what i'd call a design flaw that i forsee a possible problem with; on the power head, the cord that provides the power is connected directly over the lever you tap with your foot to lower the wand ~
all that being said, i'm still happy with the vac - is it my dream vac? no, but since drilling holes in plaster for a built in system isn't in the cards, this will do fine. and, don't worry about springing for paid shipping even if you're in a hurry - i went the free route and mine shipped the day after i placed the order and arrived the next day.

Summary: CR "Top Pick"
Comment: The Electrolux EL 6988D Canister Vacuum was one of Consumer Reports top picks. (It was actually number 2 on the list). #1 was a Kenmore, which we refused to purchase as our last 3 Kenmore vacuums have essentially broken down within 3-4 year time frame. I was very tempted to buy the Dyson Animal, but it didn't "score" as high with CR.

So far, it is working well. It is lightweight, easy to carry around. Works well on carpets and furniture. Ok on our hardwood floors. (Better off using the attachment for these, which unfortunately doesn't clip onto the vacuum anywhere-- has to be stored separately.)

Minor Negatives:
-No dirt sensor.
-The power cord is shorter than expected.
-The swivel mechanism takes some energy to overcome to get the vacuum to move in the direction you want. This also makes it a little difficult to do the stairs.

So far, so good. We'll see how it pans out... our friends have the Dyson and describe their feelings of "love at first sight" with it. I don't know that I have the same feelings of love for the Electrolux but we're giving it a chance.
